Recent acceleration in South Africa’s headline CPI, which reached a two-year high of 5.0% in June 2026 from 4.5% in May, has anchored trader positioning around the 4.1–4.7% range for the full-year average. Elevated fuel prices stemming from Middle East geopolitical tensions, alongside higher electricity and transport costs, have driven the upside surprise, with core inflation also climbing to 4.1%. The South African Reserve Bank’s May 2026 forecast of 4.4% average inflation for the year, revised higher from 3.7%, aligns closely with the leading market-implied odds. Subsequent monthly releases and any further policy-rate adjustments will likely determine whether the annual figure settles nearer the lower or upper end of the contested 4.1–4.7% bands.
