The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has remained closed since 2012, with the Czech Embassy serving as protecting power for U.S. interests. Momentum toward reopening has accelerated under the Trump administration following the 2024 fall of the Assad regime, including the May 2025 raising of the U.S. flag at the ambassador’s residence by Special Envoy Tom Barrack and a February 2026 congressional notification outlining a phased restoration of operations. The most recent catalyst is the August 24, 2026, rescission of Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation and related sanctions relief, which removes legal barriers to full diplomatic staffing, investment, and aviation ties. Regional security assessments after the Iran conflict have prompted broader Middle East embassy restaffing, though Damascus-specific timelines remain tied to ongoing stabilization, congressional funding, and security conditions. These steps reflect trader focus on diplomatic normalization as a key variable.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. government announces the reopening of its embassy in Damascus or if such a reopening is otherwise confirmed by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
An official announcement made within this market’s timeframe will qualify for a "Yes" resolution regardless of whether an actual embassy opening subsequently takes place within the timeframe.
Any opening of a U.S. embassy in Damascus will qualify regardless of its exact location.
Announcements that do not clearly commit to opening an embassy, such as general diplomatic statements, exploratory comments, or partial/conditional steps, will not count.
The resolution source will be official statements from the Governments of the U.S. and Syria; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
