Iranian authorities imposed a near-total nationwide internet blackout starting January 8, 2026, amid widespread anti-government protests triggered by economic collapse, extending it through the February U.S.-Israeli strikes and related conflict until partial restoration in late May. Connectivity remains heavily restricted as of mid-September, with slow speeds, blocked platforms, and roughly one-third of international domains inaccessible, reflecting a shift toward tiered access and a domestic National Information Network rather than full global connectivity. Recent developments include a proposed cyberspace regulation bill to expand controls, internal government criticism of blanket shutdowns due to economic harm, and reports of advancing infrastructure for a more precise national "kill switch." Trader assessments of another total blackout hinge on renewed protests, security escalations, or regime decisions balancing information control against domestic costs.
