The Galway West by-election on 22 May fills the Dáil vacancy created by Catherine Connolly’s election as President. Trader consensus positions Independent Ireland councillor Noel Thomas at 46.5 percent, ahead of Fine Gael Senator Seán Kyne at 31.1 percent, with Labour’s Helen Ogbu, Social Democrats’ Míde Nic Fhionnlaoich and several independents trailing. An early-May Irish Times/TG4 poll showed Kyne and Thomas nearly tied on first preferences, while the left-leaning vote remains split across multiple candidates. Recent RTE debates and canvassing have focused on cost-of-living pressures, fuel costs and immigration, issues that could influence transfers on count day. The outcome hinges on how local name recognition, party machinery and second-preference flows from smaller parties shape the final result.
