Frank Klingebiel, the long-serving CDU incumbent since 2006, holds a commanding lead in the Salzgitter mayoral market following his 45.6% share in the September 13 first round. This placed him well ahead of AfD candidate Patricia Mair at 25.7% and eliminated the SPD, Greens, and smaller-party contenders, setting up a September 27 runoff. Klingebiel’s established local profile, repeated direct-election victories in prior cycles, and administrative record underpin trader consensus on his strong position. A narrow path for Mair would require substantial shifts in runoff turnout or voter preferences among eliminated candidates’ supporters before the final vote count.
