Gold trades near $4,450–$4,600 per ounce in late August 2026 following a 10–14% monthly rally driven by record central bank purchases of 289 tonnes in Q2 and reduced odds of a September Federal Reserve rate hike after soft July payrolls. Persistent inflation, with core PCE at 3.7%, keeps the policy rate at 3.50–3.75% while markets price roughly a 30–50% chance of a hike, supporting real yields that cap upside. Treasury buybacks and geopolitical risks have reinforced safe-haven flows, though ETF outflows earlier in the quarter highlight sensitivity to rate expectations. Key near-term catalysts include the September 10 CPI release and the September 15–16 FOMC meeting, which will shape the market-implied path for monetary policy and gold’s trajectory into the final quarter.
