Trader consensus heavily favors "No" at 93.2% for a magnitude 9.0+ earthquake before 2027, driven by the low historical base rate of such megathrust events on the moment magnitude scale. USGS records show only a handful since 1900, averaging roughly one every 10–20 years globally, with the most recent confirmed at 9.0–9.1 in 2011. No M9+ events have occurred in 2025–2026 despite an 8.8 quake in Kamchatka last year, and current seismic monitoring by USGS and similar agencies shows no foreshock sequences or strain accumulation signals indicating imminent rupture in high-risk subduction zones like Cascadia or the Nankai Trough. This timeframe shrinks the implied probability further. A realistic challenge would require rapid model revisions from new GPS or paleoseismic data revealing accelerated slip rates, though such shifts remain statistically rare over short windows.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
