Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent since 2021, holds a commanding lead in the Braunschweig Oberbürgermeister runoff after securing 43.3 percent in the September 13 first round, well ahead of CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler at 17.2 percent. No candidate reached the absolute majority required under German municipal rules, triggering the September 27 second round between the top two finishers. Kornblum’s margin reflects strong voter support for his record on local priorities such as education, infrastructure, and public safety, alongside the SPD’s position as the largest force in the city council. Trader consensus assigns him over 90 percent implied probability, consistent with historical patterns where first-round frontrunners prevail in German mayoral runoffs. A narrow upset remains possible if turnout drops sharply or if late shifts consolidate opposition votes, though current polling and structural advantages limit that scope.
