Thorsten Kornblum, the incumbent SPD mayor since 2021, secured 43.3 percent in the September 13 first round of Braunschweig's direct mayoral election, advancing to the September 27 runoff against CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler, who received 17.2 percent. The fragmented field, with Green, AfD, and other candidates splitting the remainder, prevented any outright majority under German local electoral rules. Kornblum's lead stems from his established record on local infrastructure, education, and housing priorities, plus SPD strength in the concurrent council vote. Trader consensus reflects the sizable margin heading into the runoff, though shifts in voter mobilization or late developments could still influence the final outcome in Germany's two-round system.
