Persistent inflation above the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target, combined with a resilient labor market showing 4.3 percent unemployment and solid job gains, has driven the 93.5 percent market-implied probability of no change to the 3.50–3.75 percent fed funds rate at the July 28–29 FOMC meeting. Recent April CPI and PCE readings have remained elevated, reinforcing the central bank’s data-dependent stance following its April hold and elevated dissent. Traders see limited scope for adjustment absent sharper downside surprises in upcoming May CPI or June employment data that could shift the balance of risks.
