The Bank of Canada’s policy rate has remained steady at 2.25% since late 2025, with the latest hold on July 15, 2026, aligning with market-implied odds of no change near 99.7% for the September 2 decision. June 2026 CPI eased to 2.8% year-over-year from 3.2% in May, driven by lower gasoline prices, while core measures (median and trim) fell to around 1.9%—near the 2% target amid sub-trend GDP growth projected at roughly 0.7–2.75% for the year and unemployment near 6.5%. Traders price in the BoC’s stance of looking through temporary energy-driven headline pressures while monitoring persistent weakness in domestic demand. A sharper rebound in inflation or unexpectedly strong growth data could introduce modest volatility ahead of the announcement.

Increases or decreases of less than 25 bps will be rounded to 25 bps (e.g. an increase or decrease of 10 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 25 bps). Increases or decreases of greater than 25 bps will be rounded to the nearest 25 bps and will be rounded away from 0 in cases of equidistance (e.g., an increase or decrease of 37.5 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 50 bps). Displayed options of “Increase” or “Decrease” will include policy rate increases or decreases of any size.
