Recent stabilization of Canada’s headline CPI at 3.0% year-over-year through August 2026, driven by elevated gasoline prices amid Middle East supply disruptions, has kept the 2026 annual average inflation outlook finely balanced between the 3.0–3.4% and 2.5–2.9% ranges. Bank of Canada core measures (trim and median) remain near the 2% target while ex-food-and-energy readings hover around 2.1–2.4%, underscoring contained underlying pressures that could support a lower annual outcome if energy costs moderate. Persistent oil-price volatility, potential pass-through to broader goods and services, CAD movements, and shelter rent trends represent key swing factors, with the Bank’s recent 25-basis-point cut to 2.50% and upcoming CPI prints highlighting the data-dependent path. Trader consensus in Polymarket reflects this uncertainty, pricing in roughly even odds between the two leading brackets as markets weigh near-term energy risks against cooling base effects.
