Mahmoud Abbas, the 90-year-old president of the Palestinian Authority and longtime Fatah leader, continues to consolidate control amid persistent uncertainty over his succession. A recent Fatah conference in Ramallah unanimously re-elected him as party head while he pledged reforms and long-delayed presidential and legislative elections without setting a timeline. His October 2025 decree designated deputy Hussein al-Sheikh as interim successor for up to 90 days in the event of a vacancy, yet moves by Abbas’s son Yasser to join the Central Committee have intensified internal competition involving figures such as Jibril Rajoub. With no national elections held since 2005 and Fatah’s Central Committee positioned to shape any transition, trader assessments hinge on Abbas’s health, party dynamics, and whether scheduled November 2026 PLO council elections or other institutional steps accelerate a leadership change.
