Belit Onay, the incumbent Green mayor since 2019, secured 45.6% in the September 13 first round of the Hannover mayoral election, more than double the 21.5% for SPD challenger Axel von der Ohe, sending the contest to a September 27 runoff. Pre-election polling showed Onay maintaining a clear lead amid priorities such as climate policy, mobility transitions, inner-city redevelopment, and expanded public order measures. His established record and broad first-round support have shaped trader consensus around a strong position heading into the final vote. A narrow defeat would require unusually high mobilization for von der Ohe or significant late shifts in turnout among remaining candidates' supporters, outcomes viewed as low-probability given the current gap.
