Israel maintains a naval blockade of Gaza to prevent weapons smuggling, enforcing it through routine interceptions of vessels attempting to reach the territory. Recent Global Sumud Flotilla missions launched from Spain, Italy, and Turkey in April and mid-May 2026 were boarded by Israeli forces in international waters near Greece and Crete, with activists detained or diverted before approaching Israeli maritime zones. New departures from Turkey on May 14 continue the pattern of civil resistance efforts, yet historical enforcement shows such flotillas are typically halted far offshore. With the May 31 resolution date approaching and no shift in blockade policy or diplomatic agreement for unrestricted passage, trader consensus reflects the established barriers to entry.
