South Africa’s 2026 inflation outlook reflects a temporary upward revision driven by the recent oil-price shock from Middle East tensions, which has lifted administered prices and pushed the SARB’s baseline forecast to a 3.7% average for the year, with a peak near 4% in the second quarter. March 2026 CPI printed at 3.1%, only modestly above February’s 3.0% reading, while core measures remain near the new 3% target. Traders price the 2.9–3.5% range as the most likely outcome, balancing expectations that fuel costs will moderate later in the year against upside risks from sustained Brent prices above $100 and rand weakness. The next Monetary Policy Committee decision on 28 May and the May CPI release will provide the clearest near-term signals for resolution.
