The November 4, 2026 local government elections in Nelson Mandela Bay feature a crowded field of 38 parties and independents, with polling showing the ANC and DA each near 37 percent and no outright majority expected. This setup favors post-election coalition talks to select the mayor, sustaining tight market pricing around leading contenders Retief Odendaal of the DA and Andile Lungisa of the ANC. Odendaal, a former mayor, benefits from the DA's emphasis on service delivery fixes amid documented infrastructure shortfalls and qualified audits, while Lungisa's position reflects ANC branch support despite internal list disputes and his prior legal matters. Incumbent Babalwa Lobishe and other shortlisted ANC figures trail amid party fragmentation and civil society demands for governance reforms. Recent campaign events, including opposition boycotts of the state of the metro address and civil society "rebuild plans" tied to the vote, underscore how coalition arithmetic and turnout among swing voters could shift implied probabilities before resolution.
