Romania's fragmented political landscape after the May 5 no-confidence vote that toppled Ilie Bolojan's minority government continues to shape trader views on the next prime minister. President Nicușor Dan has scheduled party consultations for May 18 to identify a viable parliamentary majority before nominating a candidate, with options including a technocratic cabinet or renewed coalition talks among PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR. This uncertainty sustains a tight race, as no single contender commands broad cross-party backing amid competing reform priorities and fiscal pressures tied to EU funds. Recent signals from Dan favoring workable majorities over experiments keep probabilities dispersed across figures like Șerban Matei and Radu Burnete, with potential separation hinging on the outcomes of these talks or any last-minute coalition breakthroughs.

To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed by the President of Romania and receive a vote of confidence from Parliament, resulting in the official formation of a new government. Any interim or caretaker Prime Minister who does not receive a parliamentary vote of confidence will not count toward the resolution of this market.
If no such Prime Minister takes office by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Romania; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
