Ramzan Kadyrov’s position as Head of the Chechen Republic remains shaped by persistent reports of his declining health, including kidney issues and mobility limitations documented in independent Russian and Ukrainian reporting since 2023, which have fueled succession speculation despite official denials. Vladimir Putin publicly endorsed Kadyrov’s candidacy for another term during an April 2026 meeting, leading to his registration as the United Russia nominee ahead of the 18–20 September 2026 direct election. Kadyrov has maintained a visible public schedule, including recent security directives and infrastructure events, while positioning family members such as son Adam in security roles. The Kremlin’s backing and Chechnya’s loyalty to Moscow reduce near-term removal risks, though any abrupt health event or shift in federal priorities could alter the timeline for leadership transition.
