Nicolás Maduro faces U.S. federal charges in the Southern District of New York, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and weapons offenses, following his January 2026 capture in Caracas and subsequent transfer to U.S. custody. He entered not guilty pleas in early January, and as of late March court proceedings, no trial date has been set amid ongoing disputes over defense funding and motions to dismiss. The narco-terrorism statute under 21 U.S.C. § 960a has seen limited testing at trial, with prior convictions sometimes overturned due to witness credibility issues. These procedural delays, evidentiary complexities, and historical patterns in similar high-profile cases underpin the strong trader consensus that conviction on every count remains unlikely in the near term.
