The open Oberbürgermeister race in Göttingen features four main contenders—Onyeka Oshionwu (Greens, backed by Volt), Florian Dinger (SPD), Ehsan Kangarani (CDU, supported by the FDP), and Thomas Goes (Left)—following incumbent Petra Broistedt’s decision not to seek re-election. With the first-round vote set for 13 September 2026, trader odds remain closely balanced because no candidate holds an obvious path to an outright majority under the two-round system, and local party alignments plus cross-support arrangements have produced limited differentiation so far. Recent developments center on candidate approvals in July and ongoing campaign positioning on municipal finances, housing, and climate policy, yet no decisive polling shifts or late endorsements have emerged to separate the field. Any movement in implied probabilities would likely require stronger turnout signals, televised debates, or coalition signals ahead of election day.
