The ongoing trial of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the only person ever charged in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 killing, opened in Las Vegas on August 17 with prosecutors presenting his own 2019 memoir and prior statements as central evidence that he supplied the weapon and orchestrated the South Side Compton Crips retaliation. Jury selection wrapped quickly and early witness testimony, including from former detectives, is underway, lending momentum to the case despite Davis’s not-guilty plea and claims that the book details were fabricated for sales. Traders see a 62.5% chance of conviction because the self-incriminating record creates a strong narrative for the prosecution, though the defense is already attacking the statements as unreliable fiction and the passage of nearly thirty years has eliminated several potential corroborating witnesses. Upcoming testimony and cross-examination will be key swing factors in the weeks ahead.
