Recent August CPI data, with core inflation running hotter than expected at +0.3% month-over-month, has shifted market-implied odds toward an 85-90% probability of a 25-basis-point Fed funds rate hike at the September 16 FOMC meeting, including updated economic projections. This follows softer July nonfarm payrolls and has pressured equity valuations, with the S&P 500 closing at 7,657 on September 11 after a 0.8% weekly decline from its August highs near 7,817. Retail sales, housing starts, and industrial production releases that week, plus options expiration on September 18, add volatility around rate-path expectations and Treasury yields. Trader positioning reflects caution on growth stocks amid elevated borrowing costs, tempered by resilient corporate earnings.
