The near-certain trader consensus against any kiss between Trump and Xi at a summit reflects entrenched diplomatic protocols governing U.S.-China leader meetings, where formal handshakes or ceremonial bows have defined all prior encounters without exception. Recent statements from both administrations emphasize standard bilateral agendas focused on trade, technology, and security issues, with no signals of altered personal or cultural norms that would introduce such an unprecedented gesture. Historical base rates for high-level summits further reinforce this positioning, as comparable events have never featured physical contact beyond established etiquette. Late-breaking developments such as an unanticipated private agreement or health-related misstep remain theoretically possible within the resolution window but lack any supporting evidence from official channels or credible reporting.
