Ongoing gang violence, chronic funding shortfalls, and procedural disputes continue to hinder preparations for Haiti’s long-delayed 2026 general elections, scheduled for a first round on August 30. In April the Provisional Electoral Council postponed voter and candidate registration indefinitely pending alignment with a new government decree and national political pact, with no revised timeline issued. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has publicly questioned the August date amid security concerns, while tensions between the council and the executive over the decree’s content have further slowed progress. These accumulated setbacks, set against Haiti’s pattern of repeated electoral postponements since 2019, underpin traders’ assessment that another delay remains the more probable outcome before polls can be held.
