Incumbent Patrick Johnstone of the Community First slate seeks a second term in the October 17, 2026 New Westminster mayoral election against city councillor Daniel Fontaine of the New West Progressives, following years of council divisions over policy direction and local governance. Johnstone has highlighted continuity and ongoing city momentum since his 2022 victory, while Fontaine positions the contest as an alternative to the current majority. Trader positioning around Johnstone near 55 percent reflects the typical edge for sitting mayors in British Columbia municipal races, tempered by Fontaine’s established profile and party organization. The narrow implied probabilities for either candidate remain sensitive to voter registration drives, turnout patterns, and any late policy contrasts or endorsements that could shift support in this two-way contest.
