This market will resolve to "Yes" if, by March 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, Zohran Mamdani or the City of New York announces that the City of New York, or any subdivision thereof, will pay reparations for slavery. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". A qualifying announcement must come from Zohran Mamdani, the City of New York, or their authorized representatives, and must clearly and definitively state that the City of New York, or any subdivision thereof, will issue direct payments designed to rectify or remedy the historical practice of enslaving African Americans in the United States, including programs addressing the legacy and after-effects of slavery where slavery or descent from enslaved persons is an express basis for the program. A qualifying announcement will be sufficient to resolve this market "Yes" regardless of whether any payment is subsequently made, and regardless of whether the announcement is later withdrawn, modified, or revoked. The following do not constitute qualifying announcements: statements that New York City is considering, open to, or studying reparations; statements that reparations will be made only if a specified condition is met, such as the future passage of legislation; media reports unaccompanied by a qualifying official announcement; statements made in sarcasm or jest; and statements made by persons without authority to speak for Zohran Mamdani or the City of New York. Announcements of benefits related to modern human trafficking that are not related to the pre-Civil War institution of slavery in the United States will not qualify. The primary resolution sources for this market will be official information from Zohran Mamdani and the City of New York; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.Mayor Zohran Mamdani has signaled support for examining reparations tied to New York City’s historical role in slavery but has repeatedly deferred any commitment or announcement until the city’s Commission on Racial Equity releases its final report, expected in summer 2027. In late July 2026 interviews, he stated he would await the commission’s findings before deciding on cash payments or other measures, while the administration has allocated only modest funding for related community discussions amid a projected $5.4 billion budget deficit. The March 31, 2027 deadline falls before the anticipated report timeline and subsequent implementation planning in 2028, supporting trader consensus that a formal announcement is unlikely in the interim.
