John Swinney's near-certain position as Scotland's next First Minister reflects his status as SNP leader following the party's win of the largest seat total in the May 2026 Holyrood election, even without reaching the 65-seat majority threshold. This outcome enables him to lead government formation talks, secure cross-party backing, and advance priorities such as independence powers while ruling out involvement from Reform UK. Limited viable challengers from within the SNP or opposition ranks, combined with the party's sustained dominance in Scottish parliamentary arithmetic, have anchored the current trader consensus. Only developments such as a sudden internal leadership contest, parliamentary confidence vote, or major policy reversal would realistically open space for alternatives like Anas Sarwar or others.
