An arrest warrant followed, with officials describing him as a fugitive and stating intent to secure his appearance in court through available means. Castro, now 95, has remained in Cuba, making sporadic public appearances including one in mid-August 2026, with no extradition treaty in place and no confirmed diplomatic or enforcement developments that would facilitate transfer. Cuba has rejected the charges as politically motivated amid heightened US sanctions and economic measures under the Trump administration. These factors, combined with his advanced age and location, define the primary constraints on any near-term custody outcome.
