Multiple Republican candidates, including state Sen. Stewart Cathey and state Rep. Mike Echols, have qualified for the open seat following Julia Letlow’s Senate bid, creating a fragmented field in the November 3 jungle primary. Louisiana’s system requires a majority for an outright win or advances the top two to a December 12 runoff. Recent candidate filings and the absence of a dominant frontrunner have reinforced trader expectations that vote splitting among GOP contenders will prevent any candidate from clearing 50 percent on the first ballot. Democrats are also participating but hold limited prospects in the district. This dynamic aligns with the 92.5 percent implied probability against an outright first-round winner.
