Persistent reports of Ramzan Kadyrov’s declining health, including kidney failure and pancreatic issues requiring dialysis, have fueled speculation about his tenure since 2025, when he publicly requested resignation only for Russian President Vladimir Putin to reject it. Kadyrov has since affirmed his intent to seek re-election in September 2026, receiving explicit Kremlin endorsement during an April 2026 meeting with Putin that highlighted Chechnya’s military contributions. Succession planning remains centered on the presidential nomination process and regional parliamentary approval, with potential candidates including family members and close allies such as Adam Delimkhanov or Magomed Daudov, while the Kremlin prioritizes continuity to maintain stability amid the Ukraine conflict.
