Tennessee's 9th congressional district underwent major redistricting in May 2026, shifting its boundaries to include more suburban and rural areas outside Memphis and producing a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+9 along with a 21-point Trump margin in the prior presidential election. Longtime Democratic incumbent Steve Cohen opted not to seek reelection in the altered district. In the August 6 primaries, Republican state Sen. Brent Taylor and Democratic state Rep. Justin Pearson secured their parties' nominations for the November 3 general election. The revised map and resulting open-seat dynamics underpin trader consensus that the Republican nominee holds the stronger position.
