The U.S. Embassy in Damascus closed in February 2012 amid the Syrian civil war. Following the December 2024 ouster of Bashar al-Assad, the Trump administration advanced diplomatic normalization with Syria’s transitional government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Special Envoy Tom Barrack raised the U.S. flag at the compound in May 2025 as a symbolic step, while full operations remained suspended. In February 2026, the State Department notified Congress of a phased reopening plan. By July 2026, President Trump informed Congress of intent to remove Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list; the 45-day congressional review period concluded in August 2026, clearing the way for final executive action. These developments, alongside sanctions relief and bilateral meetings, shape trader assessments of timing and conditions for resumption of embassy functions.
