**Recent remarks by President Trump on August 27–28, 2026, after signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” included a lighthearted suggestion that the Atlantic or Pacific oceans could follow, but multiple reports characterized the ocean comments as jokes without any accompanying formal proposal, directive, or timeline.** Trump has successfully directed federal agencies to update domestic geographic names via executive action—such as the earlier shift of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America for U.S. federal use—but oceans fall under international law with no single-nation ownership, limiting any change to symbolic U.S. government references at most. No Board on Geographic Names process, legislation, or agency directive targeting an ocean has been initiated, and the year-end deadline leaves little room for the multi-agency coordination or international coordination that would be required. Trader consensus at 94.5% “No” reflects these structural and procedural barriers alongside the absence of concrete follow-through.

For the purposes of this market, the oceans are defined as: the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern/Antarctic Ocean.
Officially renaming any one of these five oceans is sufficient for a "Yes" resolution, regardless of the new name chosen. Renaming a subdivision of one of these oceans, such as the North Atlantic Ocean or the South Pacific Ocean, will also qualify.
If the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) renames any of the five oceans accordingly this will qualify for a "Yes" resolution.
Renaming any other body of water, including any sea, gulf, bay, strait, channel, or lake, will not qualify for a "Yes" resolution.
This market's resolution source will be official information from the Trump administration or the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, however a consensus of credible reporting stating that the US Government has renamed one of the five oceans will suffice.
