The Federal Reserve's unanimous 25-basis-point rate hike on September 16 to a 3.75-4% target range, its first since 2023, drove the primary downward pressure on S&P 500 levels during the week of September 14. Persistent inflation, fueled by elevated oil prices above $105 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions, prompted the hawkish shift, with updated projections signaling potential further tightening. The index fell from 7,619.98 on September 14 to 7,551.81 by September 16, pressured by rising Treasury yields near 5% and an AI sector selloff following industry warnings on rapid advancement. Equity valuations face higher discount rates, with year-to-date gains now tempered to around 10-11% amid the shift from earlier easing expectations.
