Recent model consensus from MetService and international guidance points to a northwesterly flow bringing mild air to Wellington on September 5, with daytime highs most likely peaking between 14–16 °C. This underpins the near-even market split between 15 °C and 16 °C, as small differences in cloud cover, timing of any clearing, or wind strength can shift the observed maximum by a degree. Persistent moderate-to-strong northwesterlies may limit surface heating while also mixing warmer air aloft, creating the narrow uncertainty band reflected in trader positioning. Updated high-resolution runs and MetService briefings over the next 48 hours will refine the exact peak before resolution.
