Tight U.S. cattle inventories at a 75-year low of 86.2 million head, coupled with USDA's May WASDE slashing 2026 beef production forecasts to 25.5 billion pounds, underpin elevated ground beef prices as the primary driver of trader sentiment. April 2026 BLS data pegs the U.S. city average retail price for 100% ground beef at $6.899 per pound—up nearly 19% year-over-year—nearing the $7 threshold amid robust demand and lean imports filling processing needs. Polymarket trader consensus prices near-certainty for $7+ while assigning 66% implied probability to $8+, reflecting supply squeezes despite wide USDA price bands (+7.8%, ranging -6.6% to +25.4%). Key catalysts include June CPI data and quarterly Cattle on Feed reports ahead of peak grilling season.

The St. Louis Fed bases its numbers for ground beef prices on the BLS's CPI release. This market will immediately resolve to "Yes" upon a qualifying update of the St. Louis Fed's chart. If no data for any month of 2026 is released by the scheduled date for the January 2027 CPI release, this market will resolve according to the data for 2026 already available at that time.
The resolution source for this market measures prices to the third decimal place. Thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving the market.
