Christopher Luxon leads the market as the incumbent prime minister heading into New Zealand’s 7 November 2026 general election under the mixed-member proportional system. His National Party leads a centre-right coalition with ACT and New Zealand First that currently holds a parliamentary majority, and recent polling averages show the bloc narrowly ahead or competitive for the seats needed to govern again. Luxon has survived two National caucus confidence votes in 2026 amid leadership speculation tied to sluggish economic growth and low personal popularity, yet no viable alternative within his party has emerged. Chris Hipkins trails as Labour leader because opposition polling remains fragmented and the centre-left bloc faces coalition arithmetic challenges. Smaller-party leaders such as Chlöe Swarbrick and Winston Peters register low probabilities given their parties’ limited paths to the prime ministership. The tight national vote and ongoing policy debates on taxes, housing, and immigration continue to shape trader assessments of coalition outcomes.
