The Federal Reserve’s unanimous 25-basis-point rate hike on September 16 to a 3.75–4.00% target range, its first increase in three years, provided the dominant catalyst for USD strength during the week of September 14. Hotter-than-expected August CPI data—headline up 0.4% month-over-month to 3.4% year-over-year and core rising 0.3%—shifted market-implied odds sharply toward tightening and lifted two-year Treasury yields above 4.6%. Escalating Middle East tensions and Brent crude above $100 per barrel added safe-haven support. The DXY climbed from the mid-99 area early in the week to 100.32 by September 16, with the post-FOMC move reflecting both the policy action and hawkish dot-plot revisions signaling further hikes. Traders now focus on subsequent inflation releases and labor data for signals on the pace of additional tightening.
