Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent serving as Braunschweig’s Oberbürgermeister since 2021, secured 43.3 percent in the September 13 first round—well ahead of CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler at 17.2 percent and the remaining field. This margin, combined with the SPD’s leading position in the simultaneous city council vote, has produced trader consensus that Kornblum will prevail in the September 27 runoff. The two-candidate format favors the frontrunner, as most first-round supporters of eliminated candidates are expected to consolidate behind the SPD option. A decisive shift would require unusually high mobilization of non-voters or a major late development capable of eroding Kornblum’s established lead in local preferences.
