Belit Onay, the incumbent Green Party Oberbürgermeister since 2019, secured 45.6% in the September 13 first round of the Hannover mayoral election, advancing to the September 27 runoff against SPD candidate Axel von der Ohe, who received 21.5%. Other contenders, including the CDU's Peter Karst at 14.1% and the AfD's Jessica Schülke at 10.8%, fell short and were eliminated. Onay's lead stems from his established record on climate policy, mobility transitions, and urban development priorities, combined with pre-election polling that showed him well ahead. The wide gap in the opening ballot has translated into strong trader consensus around his position, reflecting typical patterns in German local runoffs where first-round leaders consolidate support. A narrow path for von der Ohe would require unusually high mobilization among non-Green voters or a late shift in turnout dynamics between now and the final vote.
