Belit Onay, the incumbent Green mayor since 2019, secured 45.6 percent in the September 13 first round of the Hannover mayoral election, well ahead of SPD candidate Axel von der Ohe at 21.5 percent and other contenders including the CDU and AfD nominees. With no candidate reaching an absolute majority, the September 27 runoff pits Onay directly against von der Ohe, whose prior role as city treasurer created a unique intra-administration contest following the 2023 collapse of the local Green-SPD coalition. Trader consensus reflects Onay’s commanding lead and incumbency advantages in a city where Green priorities on mobility, climate, and urban development have shaped recent governance. A narrow runoff upset remains possible if turnout shifts sharply or late campaign dynamics consolidate opposition votes, though historical patterns in German local runoffs favor the first-round leader.
