California voters will decide the fate of the 2026 Billionaire Tax Act on the November ballot, a measure that would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of residents exceeding $1 billion to fund healthcare, education, and food assistance programs. Supporters gathered more than 1.5 million signatures—nearly double the threshold—securing likely qualification for the ballot by June 2026, with early polling showing modest initial support. Opponents have deployed tens of millions in counter-campaign spending, while several high-profile billionaires have relocated out of state ahead of the January 1, 2026 residency cutoff, raising questions about enforcement and economic impact. Historical patterns show California tax-related ballot initiatives often fail amid strong business resistance and legal challenges over constitutional validity. These dynamics shape trader consensus around the measure's passage prospects.
