Internal divisions within South Korea’s People Power Party have intensified pressure on leader Jang Dong-hyeok ahead of the June 3 local elections, with candidates such as Busan mayoral hopeful Joo Gwang-deok publicly urging his resignation over low approval ratings and perceived leadership failures. Jang has rejected these calls since late April, stating he will accept post-election judgment, yet factional tensions and a May 4 editorial highlighting eroding party unity have kept resignation scenarios in play. Traders price the probability of his departure by June 30 at 63.5 percent, reflecting expectations that election results could trigger a no-confidence vote or leadership contest within the caucus before the deadline.
