Recent July final University of Michigan consumer sentiment rose sharply to 55.2 from 49.5 in June, its highest level since February, on broad improvements across demographics and a pullback in year-ahead inflation expectations to 4.2% from 4.6%. Traders appear to weigh whether this rebound—tied to cooler gasoline prices post-Iran conflict—extends into the preliminary August reading due August 14, or reverts amid still-elevated prices and sentiment remaining 11% below year-ago levels. Market-implied odds cluster tightly around the 52–57.9 range, reflecting uncertainty over labor-market stability, monetary-policy signals, and any fresh inflation data that could shift the index before resolution.
