Recent Houthi threats of naval blockades on Saudi-linked vessels, combined with claimed missile strikes on tankers near Bab el-Mandeb, have driven sharp daily transit declines, with Kpler data showing drops from around 20 vessels to as low as one on certain August days amid elevated risk. These events sustain rerouting incentives and insurance cost pressures, positioning the sub-25 average as the market-implied leader at 44.8% odds, while the 25-29 bin at 26.5% reflects partial recovery potential if tensions ease before month-end. Broader context includes persistent Red Sea insecurity that has kept volumes well below pre-2024 norms of roughly 75 ships daily, with recent fluctuations between 20 and 40 crossings underscoring uncertainty in trader consensus.
