This market will resolve to the bracket containing the number of coterminous US states (out of 48) with D4 percent area of 0.05% or more in the US Drought Monitor release for the week of September 8, 2026. Brackets: 0 / 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6 / 7-9 / 10+. Exactly one bracket resolves "Yes". The count ranges over all 48 coterminous states — the 48 states excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The District of Columbia and U.S. territories are not considered. Each USDM release covers the seven-day period ending Tuesday at 8:00 AM ET and is published the following Thursday. Resolution is based on the first published US Drought Monitor release for the listed week. Subsequent revisions will not be considered; the first published release is final. The resolution source for this market is the US Drought Monitor at droughtmonitor.unl.edu.**Current U.S. Drought Monitor conditions as of September 1, 2026, show D4 (Exceptional Drought) in a limited but expanding set of states, primarily driven by flash drought intensification across the South-Central region.** Hot, dry weather with temperatures 6–10°F above normal and minimal rainfall has degraded conditions in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and neighboring areas, pushing some locales into D4 while streamflows and soil moisture remain critically low. Confirmed D4 presence appears in at least seven states (including Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and North Carolina), with additional pockets likely in Texas and Oklahoma based on recent degradations. **Short-term forecasts introduce significant uncertainty for the September 8 week map.** Dry conditions are expected to persist across much of the central and south-central U.S. through early September, favoring further D4 expansion or intensification in already stressed areas. However, heavier precipitation is forecast in the Southeast and parts of the northern Lower 48, which could bring localized relief and potentially reduce D4 coverage in marginal zones. A strong El Niño pattern adds longer-term context but has limited immediate influence on this weekly resolution. **The near-even market-implied odds across bins reflect genuine scientific uncertainty around the exact count of states crossing or remaining above the D4 threshold.** Key variables include the speed of flash drought development versus any scattered rainfall improvements, the precise geographic boundaries of exceptional conditions on the next U.S. Drought Monitor release, and model consensus on steering patterns. New observational data and the upcoming map will likely shift probabilities as conditions evolve rapidly in this high-impact period.
