Recent polls show Abelardo de la Espriella maintaining a clear edge over Paloma Valencia for second place in Colombia’s May 31 presidential first round, reflecting his stronger consolidation of right-wing and security-focused voters. De la Espriella, running as an independent hardliner, has benefited from primaries and legislative results that highlighted fragmentation on the right, while Valencia’s center-right primary victory has yet to translate into comparable national support. Iván Cepeda leads overall and appears headed for a runoff, leaving the contest for second place centered on which conservative candidate can mobilize enough anti-incumbent sentiment. Traders have priced in these polling trends and the short timeline before voting begins.
