Global seismicity records from the USGS indicate that magnitude 6.5 or greater earthquakes occur at an average rate of roughly one per week worldwide, forming the core driver behind the market-implied 84% probability for exactly one event during the May 11–17 window. No clusters, aftershock sequences, or elevated activity along major subduction zones or fault systems such as the Pacific Ring of Fire have been reported through the first half of the period, keeping the chance of two or more events at a modest 16%. Background-level monitoring data show typical strike-slip and thrust fault behavior without anomalous strain accumulation or foreshock patterns that might signal higher activity. Traders are watching for any final USGS updates on magnitude thresholds and epicenter locations before resolution, as even a single additional event near 6.5 could shift sentiment toward the low-probability multi-event outcomes.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until June 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
