France's August 18 announcement that it will expel two Iranian diplomats in the coming days, citing a July incident involving French embassy staff in Tehran, has reinforced trader focus on near-term diplomatic expulsions amid sustained bilateral tensions. Prior actions, including Australia's 2025 expulsion of Iran's ambassador over alleged antisemitic attacks, the U.S. removal of Iran's deputy UN envoy in late 2025 for national security reasons, and Qatar's March 2026 expulsion of Iranian military and security attachés following a missile incident, illustrate recurring patterns of reciprocal measures. These developments tie into broader geopolitical frictions involving sanctions, proxy activities, and intelligence assessments, with upcoming bilateral meetings or security incidents likely to influence further outcomes and market resolution by specific deadlines.

For the purposes of this market, “expel” refers to a formal action by a country requiring the Iranian Ambassador currently stationed there as of market creation to leave the country, including a declaration of persona non grata. Revocation of the Ambassador’s visa or denial of entry to that country will not alone suffice.
An announcement of a qualifying expulsion will suffice for a “Yes” resolution, regardless of whether the Ambassador actually leaves the country.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the relevant country’s government; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
