Rebeca Grynspan leads the trader consensus for the next UN Secretary-General due to her consistent top performance in recent Security Council straw polls, including nine encourage votes in the third round held September 18. The Costa Rican candidate, currently on leave from her UNCTAD role, benefits from regional group support and broader backing among the 15 Council members compared with Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, who placed second with eight encourage votes in the same poll. Multiple rounds of confidential voting continue without a P5 consensus or veto signals yet emerging, while lower-polling nominees such as María Fernanda Espinosa, Rafael Grossi, and others trail further behind. Interactive dialogues concluded earlier in 2026, and the process now centers on narrowing options ahead of a formal recommendation to the General Assembly before António Guterres’s term ends December 31.

This market will resolve to the individual who is formally appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations following the 2026 United Nations Secretary-General selection.
To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations following the 2026 United Nations Secretary-General selection. A recommendation by the United Nations Security Council alone will not be sufficient for resolution. Any interim or caretaker Secretary-General will not count toward the resolution of this market.
If no such Secretary-General is appointed by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the United Nations; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
