South Africa’s March 2026 consumer price index rose 3.1 percent year-over-year, up from 3.0 percent in February and aligning with market expectations amid subdued goods prices and stable food inflation. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have lifted global oil prices, with April fuel hikes expected to push the next CPI release—due May 20—toward 3.8 percent and lift the 2026 annual average into the 3.2–3.5 percent range. The South African Reserve Bank maintains its 3 percent target with a 2–4 percent band, while trader consensus reflected in the 43.3 percent implied probability for the 2.9–3.2 percent band incorporates these near-term pressures against forecasts of contained core inflation near 3.2 percent and moderating services costs.
